Huntsman: Polyurethane insulation foam could make pipes thinner, more flexible

Chemicals company Huntsman has teamed up with Switzerland-based Brugg Pipes to develop a polyurethane (PU) foam with insulating properties that enables the production of highly flexible, pre-insulated pipes suitable for use in future Ground source heat pumps and heating installations are connected to residential and commercial buildings. Brugg Pipes has implemented Huntsman's Suprasec Daltofoam TE material portfolio in its Flexstar product, which will be launched in January 2022.

According to Huntsman, the foam produced by the Suprasec Daltofoam TE material combination has better insulating properties (low lambda value) than polyethylene (PE), and its insulating layer is thinner than PE, but still has good overall insulating properties (low lambda value). U value). In addition, thinner, lighter pipes are more flexible, which means they can be shipped and installed faster and more easily.

Demand for ground-source heat pumps is expanding in North America, Europe and North Asia because they have a lower carbon footprint compared to alternative technologies, according to Huntsman.

According to Brugg Pipes, Flexstar pre-insulated pipes are specially designed for heat pump systems and are manufactured through a patented production process (according to DIN EN 15632-2 and DIN 4726), ensuring excellent boundary and longitudinal watertightness and a good oxygen diffusion barrier.
