The use of thermal insulation materials is an important means to promote energy conservation and emission reduction of buildings, polyurethane foam materials have excellent physical and chemical properties, and are widely used in the field of building insulation. The proportion of polyurethane foam materials in the consumption of building insulation materials is more than 65% in Europe and the United States, and it is also increasing year by year in China.

However, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of polyurethane foam material without flame retardant modification is only 19%, which is highly flammable, and the combustion speed is fast, and a large amount of heat and thick black smoke and toxic gases such as CO, NO, HCN and other toxic gases are released, which can easily cause suffocation, poisoning and death of personnel in the fire, causing serious loss of life and property. Therefore, it is of great significance to break through key technologies and develop environmentally friendly and efficient flame-retardant polyurethane foam materials.

The application of flame retardants can significantly improve the flame retardant properties of polyurethane foams. In this paper, the application of inorganic flame retardants, organic flame retardants and organic-inorganic compound flame retardants to polyurethane foam materials by domestic and foreign researchers in the past three years will be classified and introduced.

Organic-inorganic compound flame retardants have the dual advantages of organic and inorganic flame retardants, which are favored by researchers and are one of the important directions of flame retardant research of polyurethane foam materials in the future. At the same time, how to balance the flame retardant properties and mechanical properties of polyurethane foam materials still needs to be explored by researchers.
