MAYSTA CHEMICAL:The new generation of polyurethane foam stabilizer is internationally advanced

Recently, the project of "Development and Industrialization of a New Generation of Polyurethane Foam Stabilizer" hosted by Jiangsu MAYSTA Chemical Co., Ltd. passed the appraisal of scientific and technological achievements organized by the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation. The appraisal committee believes that the overall technology of the project has reached the international advanced level and unanimously agreed to pass the appraisal.

Sun Yu, chairman of MAYSTA Chemical, said that the project has developed a new generation of foam stabilizers suitable for a new generation of polyurethane blowing agents, including zero ozone depletion potential (ODP), low global warming potential (GWP) of polyurethane new foaming system rigid foam stabilizer, low odor, high flame retardant soft foam stabilizer series products, low volatility (VOC), low atomization (FOG) high resilience foam stabilizer series products, in the production process, Product technical indicators and material performance improvement and other aspects to achieve technological breakthroughs, improve the technical level of China's polyurethane industry chain and silicone industry chain, and promote the development of polyurethane foam industry to low-carbon, energy-saving, environmental protection and safety.

"This project is the first time that China's polyurethane enterprises have successfully designed and developed a series of functional silicon-carbon foam stabilizers through structure-activity relationship research and molecular simulation technology, with application performance as the goal orientation, with completely independent intellectual property rights." Sun Yu said that with this new technology, MAYSTA has completed the design, installation and commissioning of the 6,000 tons/year new generation of polyurethane foam stabilizer production line, and built a 22,000 tons/year homogenizer greening and automated production line. The products of the project meet or are better than similar foreign products in key technical indicators, and the products that have replaced multinational enterprises have become the mainstream of the domestic market, and are exported to the European and American markets, achieving better economic, social and environmental benefits.

The appraisal committee, headed by Jianchun Jiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, believes that the project took the lead in establishing a database on the interrelationship between molecular structure and target performance of silicon-carbon polyurethane foam stabilizers, filling the domestic gap; Developed a continuous polysiloxane process for the fixed bed, realized the controllable distribution of the polysiloxane silicon-hydrogen activity site, and the reaction temperature dropped to 40 °C; Through the process research and catalytic system development, the reactivity and selectivity of silicon hydrogen addition were significantly improved, and the solvent-free controllable preparation of polyurethane foam stabilizer was realized.

Polyurethane foam stabilizers, also known as homogenizers, are the key additives necessary for the production of polyurethane foams. Since 2017, Maxsdale has undertaken the "13th Five-Year Plan" key research project of the polyurethane industry and the transformation project of Jiangsu Province's scientific and technological achievements - "Development and Industrialization of a New Generation of Polyurethane Foam Stabilizer", using polysiloxane and allyl polyether as raw materials, and the project has completed all project plans in 3 years after small tests, pilot tests, applications and industrialization. The project has applied for a total of 37 Chinese invention patents and obtained 14 authorizations, of which "a method for continuous preparation of polysiloxanes for fixed-bed reactors" won the 2021 China Patent Excellence Award.

At present, China is the world's largest producer and user of hydrochlorohydrocarbons (HCFCs), and the polyurethane foam industry is the industry with the most application of HCFCs in China. In order to strengthen the replacement of ozone-depleting substances (ODS), according to the Montreal Protocol, China's polyurethane industry HCFCs will be completely phased out by the end of 2025. At present, the polyurethane industry is accelerating the development of green blowing agents and additives such as matching foaming agents.
