BASF declares force majeure on the supply of polyamides

Recently, BASF found itself unable to meet the demand for the amount of material needed due to unforeseen complications affecting its polyamide production operations. In response to this inevitable situation, BASF was forced to declare force majeure on its low-viscosity polyamide products and implement sales distribution measures in North America with immediate effect. Customers will receive detailed information about their assigned quantities from their respective BASF account managers.

At the moment, the duration of the force majeure declared by BASF and the resulting distribution of sales remain uncertain. BASF's account managers will be in constant communication with customers, providing updates on the status of current and future orders and ensuring transparency as developments take place. Polyamide is a polymer characterized by repeating units held together by amide bonds. Polyamides can be produced naturally (e.g., various natural proteins such as wool and silk) or artificially by step-by-step polymerization or solid-phase polymerization (e.g. nylon) or aromatic polyamides and sodium polyamides (e.g. aspartic acid).

Synthetic polyamides are widely used in textiles, carpets, sportswear, food packaging, eyewear parts, automotive and aircraft parts, tires, military supplies and protective equipment due to their excellent durability and strength.

On February 13, BASF announced that it will increase the prices of caprolactams, polyamide polymers and copolyamides in North America:

Effective March 1, 2024, or where contractually permitted, BASF will increase the prices of caprolactam, polyamide 6 (PA6) and copolyamide (PA6/66) in North America by $0.20 per pound.
